Cut & Faceted
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Facets are flat faces on geometric
shapes. Gemstones commonly have facets cut into them in order to
improve their appearance. Of the hundreds of facet arrangements
that have been used, the most famous is probably the round brilliant cut, used for diamond and many colored gemstones. The art of cutting a faceted gem is an exacting procedure performed on a faceting machine. The ideal product of facet cutting is a gemstone that displays a pleasing balance of internal reflections of light known as "brilliance", strong and colorful dispersion which is commonly referred to as "fire" and brightly colored flashes of reflected light known as "scintillation". |

Cabochon
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Cabbing is the most popular form of gem
cutting - a gem or bead cut in convex form and highly polished. Cabs
are gems that are cut with a flat bottom and a curved or domed top.
Cutting "en cabochon" is usually applied to opaque gems. The usual
shape for cutting cabochons is an oval. A cabochon or cabachon is a
gemstone which has been shaped and polished, as opposed to
facetted/faceted - facets are flat faces on geometric shapes.

| Tumble Stones | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Tumbling is a simple process where the rough gemstone is put in a revolving barrel with abrasives. Progressively finer abrasives are used until a polish is obtained. This process closely resembles what happens to rocks in a stream or on the beach, except that the level of polish is much higher | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
